When it comes to your cat's safety and comfort when flying via airline, at The Sunshine Home at This Old Cat we have the knowledge and experience to do it right!
We begin by recommending the best carrier (also called a "crate") for your cat to fly via domestic (US) airlines: the PetMate Vari Kennel Deluxe or Petmate Sky Kennel Medium "200" size (the one pictured at left, not the "Junior" version). We believe it is the best-made carrier for this purpose. It is very sturdy, with a secure locking door, and has excellent ventilation. And at 28 inches long, 20.5 inches wide and 21.5 inches high it seems to offer the purr-fectly sized space with more headroom than most carriers in this class.

And always consult with your veterinarian before shipping your cat. Most airlines will require, at a minimum, a current Health Certificate from your veterinarian (stating the cat is healthy and cleared to fly) and a current rabies vaccination certificate. Check with the airline to make sure you are following their rules and regulations.
This information here is basically geared towards domestic (US) air travel. If you plan on shipping your cat to, from or through other countries check out the USDA/APHIS web site for details on importing/exporting cats from/to a specific country APHIS Pet Travel.
